Adventures in Video Poetry

This project called upon the “2014” me, who wanted to be a film director and loved to edit pictures. As it turns out I’m still as bad with video editing software as I was back then. Except now I didn’t even have a PC to work on. Nevertheless please enjoy my work.

The first concept of the video project was a comedic gnome attack made to the beat of the Edvard Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King.” After some tries in imovie in the university’s Mac computers, I decided it wasn’t gonna work out. I found and old PC of mine which my mother was using and surprisingly it still had the old software I used back in 2015. VSDC editor was useful but tedious, I made about 27 seconds of content before I gave up (27 seconds which took about two days to grind out). So I downloaded Adobe After effects (for its free seven-day trial of course), and began my work. After grinding it for some hours I made some progress and decided to call it a day. What happened next is tragic and tears fall as I write this; the darn wretched thing said my trial was over. Devastated I tried to find the saved project, but I couldn’t even locate the hours of work.

After so many botched attempts, I decided then that I was just not going to do the project. Of course this while I was searching for online software, because I never truly give up I just sulk until a new plan of action comes up. And it did, I found Animaker, which is cute and easy to use but wasn’t what I wanted at all so I wrote a new poem. Up there is the product of my journey.

I really like the poem, and the music certainly gives it a unique feel to it. This song gives it an eerie feeling to it in the beginning, then it turns playful. However, the creepiness of the words with the playfulness of the music creates and interesting juxtaposition. Wht not try the poem with the music of Gustavo Santaolalla. His guitar rifts would make an excellent companion to the eeriness of the poem imo.

Hey! Thanks for checking it out, I’m happy you enjoyed it!

I actually wrote the poem and its escalating theme while listening to the crescendo of the song, which I think is why they compliment each other so well. I can’t really bear to see this poem with any other composition. But it would be a nice project to write another poem that perfectly compliments a passionate guitar.

That is a wonderful suggestion, I might give it a try, thank you!
